Mr. Stephen’s departure

Earlier today, Mr. Stephen announced that he would not be teaching at LHS next year. Mr. Stephen was an outstanding band and orchestra director who inspired excellence in the instrumental music program every day, and he will be missed by students, by parents, and by his colleagues.

While we are sorry to see Mr. Stephen go, we will continue with our normal business throughout the summer and into the start of the next school year. In particular, summer marching band rehearsals and camps will still take place according the schedule we have posted. Mr. Melaragno and I will still run rehearsals, Dave and Kathy will still work with the drum line, and Michael and McKayla will still work with the color guard.

Parent Information for 2015-16

At our parent meeting last month, our boosters gave parents important information about their students’ participation in the music program at LHS. Here’s what they handed out:

2015-16 Band and Orchestra Audition Music

Band and orchestra auditions for the 2015-16 school year will take place on March 16th, 2015 at Lakewood High School. All current LHS music students are encouraged to audition, as well as music students enrolling as 9th graders or transfering from other high schools.

For the scales, students should play as many octaves and at as fast a tempo as they can play cleanly. For the exceprts, students should play as close to the indicated tempos as possible.

Orchestra auditions will consist of one scale (G for violin, A for viola, cello, and bass) and the prepared excerpts attached below. Empty Bowl Concert

Greetings LPAC Families & Friends: It’s time for one of our largest fundraisers of the year, the Empty Bowl Concert & Dinner, Wednesday, February 18th  from 7:00 – 9:00pm at Lakewood High School in the West Atrium & Auditorium. The cost is $10 per person, and the fee includes dinner and the concert. Besides dinner and the concert, there will be a silent auction, where you will be able to bid on different baskets, each filled with items donated to LPAC.

As always, donations and volunteer efforts are key to the success of this fundraiser. There are plenty of ways that you can contribute to the success of this year’s event, and we hope you will join us.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns contact feel free to contact Cindy Aragon at 303.906.2475 or

Call for donations

Desserts: We need dessert donations for the dinner. These can be any type of treat, homemade or store bought. Desserts can be dropped off on the day of the concert, Wed. 2/18. If bringing them in the AM, you can take them to the band room. Afterschool they can be brought directly to the West Atrium.

Silent Auction Items: If you have access to products or services that would be a good fit for the auction, please contact us. We can provide you with a receipt for tax purposes. Things like movie passes, gift certificates, ski passes, sports tickets, spa treatments, handicrafts, re-gifted items can all make great auction items. More information about donations for the auction can be found in this donation letter.

Basket Donations: We are in need of empty baskets for the auction. Please bring in any empty baskets, buckets, or bins that you have and we’ll fill them up with auction items. The due-date for basket donations is Friday, February 6, 2015.

Call for volunteers

In the weeks before, parents will meet to assemble the silent auction baskets. On the day of Empty Bowl, we’ll need several volunteers to help with various tasks. Additionally, this year there will be a coat check as well as an Italian drink bar, and we’ll need parent volunteers to staff those. If you’re able to help, contact Cindy Aragon at 303.906.2475 or

“Extra” marching band time

This week is the last week of marching band, and to celebrate the band’s success this season, students have planned several evenings of special activities. These activities are student-led, and they are great team-building experiences, so we hope all students are able to participate. However, these activities are in addition to a very busy week of rehearsals, and students need to keep up with their assignments in their other classes. Therefore, students are not required to stay any later than 7:00 on any night.

For students who have time and are interested in participating, the schedule for those extra activities is as follows:

  • Monday, 7:00 – 9:00
  • Tuesday, 8:00 – 9:00
  • Wednesday, 7:00 – 9:00

Congratulations Bengal Regiment

Congratulations to the marching band students for their performances last week! The band won the Jeffco Marching Festival, played a great show at the football game, and placed 8th out of 26 bands competing at the Legacy Marching Festival. The students have a great show, and we’ll continue to improve upon it during the remaining four weeks of the marching season.
