Rehearsals: The Bengal Regiment begins rehearsing as early as June 1, with full-band sessions weekly plus Mini Camps of 2-3 days in a row scheduled at intervals throughout the summer. In addition, Section Leaders will schedule mandatory sectional practices once a week. In August, the Regiment devotes itself full time to intensive preparations for the competition season with 2-3 weeks of all-day Band Camp leading up to the start of the school year.

The scheduled start time of Regiment rehearsals is the time at which the students are expected to be arranged in an arc in front of the Drum Major’s stand, instruments nearby, for warm-up exercises and announcements. Therefore, your student will need to arrive at the rehearsal location at least 15 minutes early in order to be in position at start time.

Many parents become frustrated with their students after rehearsals because it seems the kids will never tear themselves away to come home! As members of a large body of students engaged in a cooperative enterprise, all Regiment kids are expected to assist in packing up the pit instruments, the electric metronome, the Drum Major’s stand, any garbage lying around, etc., as well as putting away their own belongings before departing. These chores take place after the scheduled end-time of the rehearsal, and help to develop the corps ethic of the Regiment’s members. In addition, there may be quick mini-meetings with Section Leaders or Mr. Harris. Your student will need you to be patient, but you will enjoy learning quite a bit about his or her life in the Regiment by arriving at the scheduled time and watching, and by getting to know the other Regiment parents waiting there.

*Note: Mr. Stephen fully understands that students may occasionally miss summer rehearsals because of family vacations. All he asks is that students give him advance warning of absences in order to remain in good standing. The 2-3 weeks of Band Camp in August are very intense and productive, however, and students are strongly discouraged from missing any part of that Camp. Please email Mr. Stephen at email: cstephen@jeffco.k12.co.us if you are going to absent.

Performances & Competitions: While many people assume that a marching band exists primarily to support its school’s football team, the Bengal Regiment’s activities center on competition with other high school bands from Colorado and nearby states. The culmination of these activities is the Colorado Bandmasters’ Association (CBA) Finals Competition in October, where the Regiment has twice placed among the top eight Colorado high school marching bands. The Regiment does indeed appear at some LHS football games, as well as in several local parades including Lakewood on Parade and the Denver Parade of Lights. Some years an extra-special post-season performance may be scheduled for the Regiment, such as marching at Disneyland or in London’s New Year’s Day Parade.

Bengal Regiment Marching Uniforms are the property of the Jefferson County School District and are kept at the school. The uniforms are NEVER released to the students for taking or wearing home.

To complete their uniforms, students will be required to purchase shoes and gloves. The shoes, which are specially designed for marching, are available through Mr. Stephen and cost $35. Students should wear their own athletic shoes for practices. Although the brand of marching shoe offered by Mr. Stephen may differ from year to year, it is perfectly acceptable to wear a previous year’s “edition” if they still fit comfortably and look appropriate.

Gloves are also an important part of the uniform and are also available through Mr. Stephen for $7.00 a pair. You will have to purchase two pairs in order to have the correct complement of one white and one black glove for performances. The leftover gloves can be used as replacements for worn-out ones.

A third purchase is a garment bag for storage of the uniform during the season. While the school does own clear bags for off-season storage, these should remain at the school. Students are asked to purchase an orange garment bag through Mr. Stephen for $15. This will be their own property and will have storage capacity for the uniform, gauntlets, gloves and shoes, which the school bags do not. After marching season is ended and concert season is under way students use these bags for storing their tuxedoes and gowns. The bags are very durable and should last far beyond the students’ careers at LHS.

Payment for the shoes, gloves and garment bags is to LHS, not to LPAC.

T-shirts featuring the current season’s graphic design are issued during the summer to each member of the Bengal Regiment, including the Guard, at no additional cost. They are required to be worn under the marching uniforms for a uniform half-dress appearance. These shirts may also be the “uniform,” with blue jeans, at certain less formal parades. Any overstock will be available for sale at the Fall Potluck Picnic.

Color Guard Uniforms and shoes for the Bengal Regiment Color Guard are chosen by the guard instructors and are included in the assessments. The use of props such as flags, rifles, poles and sabers is also included.
