Lakewood High School Tri-M Music Honor Society |
|
A program of MENC The National Association for Music Education
The Lakewood High School chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society was
established in the 2005-2006 school year. New candidates are nominated by
current Tri-M students who agree to act as their sponsors and acquaint them with
the meaning and responsibilities of membership. Students who accept the
invitation to join are expected to perform a recital on their major instruments or
voice. Many of our members love to perform and will gladly accompany the
candidates at their recitals. The Tri-M Society meets every other Thursday at 7:15 am in the Instrumental Music Room. Attendance at these meetings is a required part of being a member of our organization. They are also your opportunity to help plan the service activities and musical field trips we enjoy throughout the year! We help at JeffCo’s Solo & Ensemble Festival, attend concerts at the Denver Center for Performing Arts, and travel to the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs for a day with the Colorado Music Educators’ Association (CMEA) where we learn about college music programs and different ways to teach music in a variety of settings. In addition to participating in the Honor Society’s activities, our members are expected to demonstrate on-going improvement of their music performance skills as well as maintain a good GPA and, of course, good music class grades. All members receive a membership card and sew-on Tri-M patch, and graduating seniors receive a special cord which they may wear with their gowns on Graduation Day to celebrate their dedication to the musical arts. Mr. Stephen, our faculty sponsor, will gladly answer your questions about Tri-M. *Excerpted from www.menc.org/information/trim/overview_intro.html , the official Tri-M Society website. “The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor society for middle/junior high and high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership.... “The Tri-M Music Honor Society logo is rich in symbolism. The three M’s stand for “Modern Music Masters,” the society’s original name. Music is represented by the lyre and the scroll, which denote accomplishment and service. The five lines of the music staff indicate the five criteria upon which members are selected: scholarship, character, cooperation, leadership, and service.”* |
